Gas Testing in the Food and Beverage Industry
Gases that could enter the food chain are subject to strict regulations for obvious reasons.
For example, CO₂ produced during anaerobic fermentation can be sold to beverage manufacturers to carbonate beverages; therefore, strict testing specifications apply to purity testing.
Food packaging must be filled with inert gases such as nitrogen to extend shelf life and preserve the products. The breathing air used by firefighters, pilots, and divers must be sufficiently pure to ensure safe use.
SGS GAS conducts testing in accordance with all industry standards, such as:
- International Society of Beverage Technologists – ISBT Pharmacopeia (USP)
- European Industrial Gases Association – EIGA 70/17 Pharmacopeia (USP)
- Carbon Dioxide Purity
- Nitrogen Analysis

All gases are tested in accordance with EN 12021:2014 or customer specifications.
Breathing gases for use in aviation, scuba diving, and maritime life support (Defense Standard 68-264)
Hydrogen Analysis and Biogas
Green energy and biogas are rapidly growing markets worldwide, where new providers are supplying hydrogen from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. However, the purity of the hydrogen—whether “green” or “gray”—is of critical importance to a number of industries. This is particularly true for rapidly growing companies in the fuel cell and electrolyzer sectors, which must meet very strict purity requirements, such as those specified in the ISO 14687-2 standard.
We are one of only a few European laboratories capable of testing hydrogen to the exacting specifications required for refueling vehicles.
Biogases such as methane and CO₂, which are produced through the anaerobic digestion of waste, must be purified before they enter the power grid or the food chain.
Here, we help new market entrants comply with specifications such as the calorific value (CV) and GQ8.
Test with Pure Steam
SGS’s gas analysis services offer pure steam testing to qualify equipment, operations, pure steam, and pure steam generators, steam distribution systems, and the steam supply to autoclaves in accordance with EN 285:2015.
Typical exams include:
